F1,F2 and Multigenerational EXPLAINED

When you’re researching Labradoodles, you’ll often see terms like F1, F2 & Multigenerational. These labels simply describe a dog’s generational background i.e. what breeds were used to produce them & how established the lines are.

A Multigenerational Australian Labradoodle (AL) is bred from

  •  Labradoodle x Labradoodle lines over several generations

These are the generations we focus on at Cypress Labradoodles. Our pups are a minimum of 5 generations of AL, allowing our families to choose us with confidence, because they are carefully bred for consistency in temperament, coat  & conformation:

  • Low-shedding, allergy-friendly coats
  • More reliable size range within a litter
  • Balanced, social, people-focused temperaments

An F1 Labradoodle is a first-generation cross between two purebred parents:

  • Labrador Retriever × Poodle

They’re a first-cross pairing, therefore there can be more variation between puppies in:

  • Coat type (some may shed more than others)
  • Allergy-friendly traits
  • Size and overall consistency

An F2 Labradoodle is produced by breeding two first-generation Labradoodles:

  • F1 Labradoodle × F1 Labradoodle

They're two mixed-generation dogs, F2 litters can show a wide range in:

  • Coat texture and shedding
  • Adult size and structure
  • Predictability of traits

Cypress Labradoodles are 5th generation (or higher), it means the lineage has been bred within established Labradoodle lines for many generations. In general, the higher the generation, the more likely you’ll see:

  • A stable, consistent coat type
  • More predictability in appearance and temperament
  • More uniform outcomes across a litter
